Auction Rules

Bidding

Bids must be submitted via email to auction@baxterweb.com. Please use "Auction Bid" as the subject of the email. The text of the message must include the following information:

You can combine multiple bids in the same email.

We will send confirmation of your bid via email by the end of the day it is submitted, Pacific Time. At that time, the online catalog will be updated to reflect all bids received that day. If you don't see your bid appropriately reflected in the online catalog, you should contact auction@baxterweb.com. We are not responsible for lost bids.

Bids must be in whole US dollars. The first bid must be at least 20% of the estimated value given.  For items where the estimate value is not given ("n/a"), the minimum bid is $1.

The minimum required overbid is the current bid plus the minimum increment, as defined in the table below. A current bid of "$$" means there are no bids.

Current Bid Minimum Increment

$0-49

$1

$50-99

$2

$100-249

$5

$250-499

$10

$500-1000

$20

$1000+

$50

If more than one bid is received for the same amount for the same item, the first bid received will prevail.

Please note that any shipping/handling costs and applicable sales tax are extra, and are not included in the bid amounts.

Maximum Bids (aka Proxy Bidding)

This is a technique like that used by eBay. All bids are treated as the maximum amount you are willing to pay for an item. However, your bid will automatically be reduced to the lowest amount that still outbids everyone else. Your maximum bid will be hidden from other bidders so that your winning bid cannot be unfairly driven up.

Here is now it works. If your bid is more than the minimum required bid, we will reduce your bid to that minimum amount. Later, if other bids are received that are less than or equal to your original maximum bid, then we will automatically increase your bid to an appropriate increment over all intervening bids, up to your original maximum bid.

Auction Duration

The auction starts October 12, and ends at the end of the day November 1, Pacific Time.

At the end of the auction, if the current bid for any lot was received during the final day, that lot will remain open for an additional day.  This will continue until the current bid has survived at least one full day. The purpose of this rule is to give the penultimate bidder a reasonable time to counter-offer, and thus to discourage poaching.

Winning Bids

Generally, the high bidder at the end of the auction (and any necessary extensions) will win the right to purchase the item. There are two exceptions:

  1. The three Berrocal items (m1, m2, m3) have reserve prices. If the winning bid is not at least 50-60% of the estimated value, we reserve the right sell the lot on eBay instead of to the winning bidder.

  2. If in our judgement, an individual wins an inordinate number of lots in any one category, we may pass the winning rights for some items to a lesser bidder. David's heirs wish that his puzzles be distributed as broadly as possible, and such redistribution may be necessary to achieve this. We do not expect that this rule will be used, but reserve the right to do so.

All winning bidders will be notified via email at the end of the auction. Notification will include total costs, including shipping, handling and applicable sales tax. Payment must be received within 3 weeks of end of the auction. If full payment is not received, we reserve the right to sell items to a lesser bidder or via other means.

Payment and Shipping

Payment must be in US dollars. Cash, check and wire transfer are acceptable. Sorry, no credit cards.

You assume the risk for failure of postal transfer of payment. Thus, we recommend that you take appropriate precautions when sending payment, such as insurance or registered/certified mail.

All puzzles will be shipped by conventional US Post Service or UPS. Overseas packages will be shipped air mail, unless the slower but less expensive surface mail is requested. Insurance is available upon request.

Eligibility

One of the goals of this auction is to keep David's puzzles within the IPP puzzle community. For this reason, this is a private auction, open only to people on the current, IPP19 mailing list.

The Auction catalog is only available online at this web site. If you do not have access to the Internet, then you should contact someone who does to have them print the catalog pages and  then place the bids for you.
